Values and attitudes of a society are contextually specific, and are often the central focus for composer’s to produce texts.

Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner (1992) was influenced by the 1980’s, a decade concerned for the environment, as well as a number of medical breakthroughs such as IVF and cloning.

Similarly, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein (1831) was influenced by the 1800’s, a transitional period between the Gothic and Romance Era’s, with the discovery of galvanic technology.

These texts will be compared and contrasted to themes both composers are attempting to bring to the audience’s attention; science and technology, moral behaviour and man playing God.

How these texts influence values and attitudes will also bring forward the composers aim and contextual inspiration for these texts.

Technology may cause destruction to the natural world.

The extent to which technology is used in society may cause danger to the natural inhabitants.

Blade Runner expresses Scott’s ominous warning of the extensive use of science and technology.

Tyrell’s abuse of it results in the overuse of power and a hubristic approach in creating replicants for dangerous works that humans did not want to partake in.

The 2019 society looks like an apocalyptic hell in the absence of any natural environment.

To support Scott’s idea of a widespread use of science and technology, aural components such as diegetic sounds, including sirens and alarms, create an uncomfortable feeling for the viewers.

Also, the use of electronic, non-evolving music evokes the futuristic technologies present.

The film noir technique is additionally used throughout the film to establish a gloomy, dark, rainy setting, much like an artificial world that is perceived by the composer to remind viewers on the gloominess of a society totally dependent on technology.
