Philosophy of Supervision

In my years of experience, supervision has to be an exceptional person with specialized skills in order to lead their people whether in education, medical or business etc. That individual needs to have a vision, goal and mission in order to accomplish the requirements or daily duties that are expected. Seltzer (2001) “Vision without action is a daydream”. “Action without vision is a nightmare" (p. 1). Supervisors should be have the skills to influence people to achieve a goal, provide guidance, decision making, values and morals, strong ethics, effective communication skills, risk-taking, performance and evaluation, team player, motivator, knowledge/expertise in their field and the most importantly build a relationship and have respect for one another.

Hill (1992) states, “to manage at all levels, communication skills, leadership skills and time management skills are required. These skills are at the heart of all successful businesses and at the heart of effective management of teams of people” (p. 107). As supervisors they are expected to train their own team members and provide them help with team member’s learning. Furthermore, Hill said, “This means that supervisors must also have coaching skills to support their staff. The skills of a trainer are specialized and will need to be developed” (p. 153). Once again, there will be demand for creativity to achieve this. Supervisors needs to lead by examples to earn the respect of their employees/coworkers and students to reach goals and produce positive productivity for the sake of their business.
