Diversity within an Organization

Within any organization you will encounter diversity. “The state or fact of being diverse; difference; unlikeness, a point of difference” (Dictionary.com, 2011) is the definition of diversity. Workforce diversity is defined as “describes how people differ in age, race, ethnicity, gender, physical ability, and sexual orientation” (Schermerhorn, Ch. 1). Diversity can bring out the best in an organization as well as the worse in an organization. Diversity can bring out the best because when there are different individuals, ideas and concepts can be looked at by more than one way, it also brings new ideas, and methods of doing things to the organization. This concept can also bring out the worse if the individuals or groups cannot agree on the ideas or concepts, or how to carry the ideas or concepts out.

Communication within an Organization

In order for any organization to be successful, and effective it needs to be able to communicate within itself. Communication is done on every level and between all employees, customers, and any other stakeholders. Dictionary.com defines communication as “the act or an instance of communicating; the imparting or exchange of information, ideas, or feelings; something communicated, such as a message, letter, or telephone call.” Both negative and positive communication will happen within the organization, and the managers and other top level individuals should have the skill to communicate in order to be an effective and efficient to the organization. The vision, mission, strategies, ideas, concepts and so forth of the organization would not be obtained without the use of communication within the organization.
