For many people, mainly for women, shopping is not only the necessity, but also a peculiar kind of diversion in which one visits a variety of stores in search of one concrete thing or simple buying all the togs which only fit. The most men don’t like shopping at all and prefer to go to a small shop with the small range of goods in order to choose something quickly and go away. A lot of homekeepers adore strolling through the food market or supermarket and having attentive look at each thing they buy. Everyone can find a suitable way of shopping in the modern world.

The most popular big shops are department stores, supermarkets and malls. What is the difference between them and between big and small shops?

A department store specializes in retail trading a wide range of the goods and offers the buyer a choice of multiple merchandise lines and price points in all product categories. Department stores usually sell apparel, furniture, home appliances, electronics, and additionally select other lines of products such as hardware, toiletries, cosmetics, photographic equipment, jewellery, toys and sporting goods.

A supermarket is a self-service store offering a vast variety of food and household goods, organized into departments. It is larger in size and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery store. Here meat, fresh produce, dairy and baked goods can be bought on a par with various nonfood items such as household cleaners, pharmacy products, and pet supplies. Most supermarkets also sell a variety of other household products: alcohol, household cleaning products, medicine and clothes. A larger full-service supermarket combined with a department store is sometimes known as a hypermarket.

A shopping mall is one or more buildings forming a complex of shops with interconnecting walkways enabling visitors to easily walk from unit to unit, along with a parking area. It’s like a modern, indoor version of the traditional marketplace.
