Deadlines

¬  Thursday 19 August 2010 (9.30 am) - scripts submitted by 9.30 am on Thursday 26 August will be marked without incurring a penalty

Individual scripts to be submitted electronically via LEARN (or via email or hardcopy) to Keith Dixon (Keith Dixon to mark and return with feedback by 7 September)

Process

There are two parts to this assessment. Each requires an individual submission, as follows:

•         A feature of the course is group work, reflecting the way accountants often work with other people in employment positions. During a class in early August (Monday 9 August), time will be set aside to conduct a discussion in groups about group working experiences in the first weeks of the course: some briefing sheets will be provided on which to focus the discussion. Between then and the assessment deadline , each student should prepare a short essay (about 750 words) about an aspect of his/her experience of group working and its implications for future work as an accountant (or similar public service professional).

•         The Asociación Chilena de Seguridad (ACHS) case study features in the course schedule in August. Around that time, several items (i.e. articles and monographs) on governance also feature in the course. Please choose two of these articles (marked *** on LEARN).

By the assessment deadline, each student should prepare a medium length essay (about 1,200 words) taking one point from the one article and one point from the other article, and show how each applies to, or has implications for, the ideas and events reported in the ACHS case study.

Outputs

A short essay about group working, as per above. (This is worth a third of the total marks for Assessment 1)

A medium length essay on the ACHS case study, as per above. (This is worth two-thirds of the total marks for Assessment 1)
