Management and leadership is the same. Many say it is and there are those who say there is difference. A leader is not the same as a manager. A leader does just that lead individuals by motivation and encouragement. A manager does just that, manages. A leader is a person who can get others to follow where others could not. Some believe that you can’t have one without the other. You have to have both good leadership skills and good management skills in order to motivate, lead and manage individuals. This paper is to explore some of the similarities and differences between leadership and management.

Management is a bottom line focus: How can I better accomplish this? “Management is doing things right” (Covey, 1989, p101). The main functions of management are planning, organizing, influencing, and controlling. It is imperative that managers master these functions and use them in their daily role as a manager. Managers focus on maintaining systems and processes (Maxwell, 2004, p14). Not only should managers master the four main functions they should also by organized, effective communicators and active listeners.

Jonathan Jenkins must implore all the four functions of management and the basic skills needed to accomplish his task and meet the goals of the company of replacing his fleet of vehicles within the 60 days allocated. Planning requires Jonathan to assess the goals and the needs of the company and in the future. Once this has happened he needs to initiate a plan of action to meet those goals. He should assess his available resources which are human or manpower. Financial resources or available funds needed to purchase the fleet of vehicles. Information resources, researching to determine what vehicles are available. Will these vehicles exceed the amount of funds that have been allocated to make the purchase?
