‘Yes, sir” or “Yes, mam” are phrases that are not heard very often in today’s times. Manners and respect are something that are crucial in life, but rarely taught to our youth anymore. The extent of what is taught in today’s society usually ends with “please” and “thank you”. Manners are an overlooked skill that everyone needs to learn. If they are taught early in life, they can make a positive impact on everyone’s life. With manners come respect and etiquette. The amount of respect that people nowadays show is quickly dwindling. I feel this is to blame on the lack of manners our youth is taught. Etiquette is something that is almost nonexistent in today’s culture. Most youth and young adults do not know anything about etiquette. Learning this skill will only improve society.

If manners are taught early in life, our society would be improved more and more with each generation. If everyone showed respect to others, we would all be better people. Respect is something that is used in everyday life. You have to use respect to earn respect. If our youth is taught how to respect themselves and others, they will have better lives. Someone that lives with respect as a value goes further than someone who does not know what it means.

By using manners, we can all communicate better. People would not be trying to downgrade others, or trying to talk over another’s words. If we are polite and listen to what others say instead of trying to only voice our opinion, then we will learn to communicate with others better. If the world can learn to communicate better with each others, than we can solve more problems.

By teaching our youth manners and respect, I believe the crime rates would start to decline. Most criminals commit crimes because they have not had positive role models in their lives. If manners are taught early in life, we will pass those skills from generation to generation; therefore, making a positive effect in all aspects of life. Our society as a whole will...
