EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The case study approach to understanding the problems of organizational management is both experiential and effective in redressing the perceived problems, particularly the problems of managing the human resources of any organization. This particular report examines the case of the Regency Grand Hotel, a five-star hotel located in Thailand. The problems arose when the hotel, which had traditionally been managed under Thai ownership, was taken over by an American hotel chain. The new General Manager Mr. Becker then implemented a strategy to empower the employees without considering that these traditional and culturally oriented Thai workers may not adjust well with the modern western style of management. Neither did he foresee the labor issues, the customer problems and the large-scale absenteeism and employee turnover that resulted post empowerment implementation. He also did not plan well, did not perform any reviews for adopting such concept, nor train and better equip the employees for such change over. This report seeks to understand the key problems with the hotel, the major reasons for the state of affairs, and how far theoretical approaches to people management bear out the benefits and limitations of Becker’s approach in the whole matter.
