Question 1: How Aqualisa came up with the idea for Quartz
Aqualisa came up with the idea for Quartz only because of his believe to have the company focus on innovation and differentiation, improve product and service quality and cope with rising pressure from competition. The company was losing its point of difference against competitors as a result of no real product innovation for a long time.
There are several approaches to create new products, however, the approach by Aqualisa was also effective to have new successful new product. This was the need of the time to maintain current competitive position ahead of its competitors and take the new product development project seriously, considering it a must-be-successful project and build the product from the customer’s point of view to solve customers’ problem.
Question 2: Marketing research initiatives and its effectiveness
In the process of making Quartz, Aqualisa implemented a number of market research initiatives, including group focus on future trend of showers; market research on customer’s problems and attitudes toward showering; expert’s opinion, etc. Product team took the idea from the customer research, brought it through mechanist for technical solution and developed a prototype. After the product is shaped, Aqualisa tested it with potential users and rebuild the product taking into accounts the customer’s comments several times. And Quartz was the result of their extensive research that consumer wanted a shower that looked great, delivered good pressure at stable temperatures, was easy to use, and didn’t break down. Plumbers wanted a shower that was easy to install that would not break down or require routine service. Aqualisa was able to deliver a solution that met consumer needs as a result of a breakthrough idea to locate the mechanism that mixes the water remotely. Overall benefits of the Quartz shower were indeed significant.
