I make my way into the emergency room at Bellefonte hospital. The waiting room is packed with so many people. I make sure I got all of my things so that I can begin searching for an interviewee. I am ready to begin; I look around the packed room and spot out a girl wearing a Rio Grande basketball shirt. As I approach her, I ask politely if I could interview her for a class project. Yes, you may, she replies.
I am doing a research study on health care in the Appalachian Area. I will be asking five questions, “Do you think you have the time?” I ask politely. Yes you may, she replied. I thank her for agreeing to help me with my study. Now I look down at my notebook and begin my interview.
What are your feelings about the quality of health care here”? I ask. She is in deep thought, as she didn’t know what I meant. I let her know that it is just her opinion. “It is something that is expected. I really never have been to the doctor a lot. Only thing I really worry about are my results”, she replied. The young lady looks down at her phone as she receives a text message. I wait patiently as she finishes up her message and ask if I can begin, “Yes you may”, she replied.
“Would you describe an experience you’ve encountered seeking health care.” “There was a time where I was experiencing a racing heart, she mentioned. I had gone to two doctors about the same problem. Neither of them could figure out the reason. One of them mentioned to me that your heart changes every 10 years. I never had any problems to make me see them again.” After she finished answering the question, she had to send another text message back. This time I had to wait even longer as she was called back to see the charge nurse.
