Abstract:

Today in America, people come here to live the American dream, whatever that may be for them. But then there are the others that Immigrate here from other countries because of miss conceptions of America being the land of milk and honey, and having streets paved of gold. But once here they see the reality of what it is like in here, and have no means to return home. In the next pages we will discuss poverty in America, why it exists, and why it has happened.

Poverty in America

Poverty is an epidemic worldwide, that seems to be spreading and getting worse with time, but in America it is a problem that we too have, and many factors contribute to it. Some might argue poverty on many levels, from social transgression, to social status, even to gender and sex bias as reasons and means for poverty. I will start off by going back to the 1960’s and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a Dream speech” Farber (94) in which he had the dream of black and white, side by side in the work place and public. In fact this idea would help with poverty getting many people of color and race more in the work force. But many also were against this ideology, and put up a fight. Now to the more recent we see a-lot has changed with race and gender in the work place, but still needs help. As stated in 2006 in Poverty in America Today “The problem of persistent poverty is a complex one that includes communities and individuals who, through no fault of their own, find themselves unable to make ends meet in this globalizing, information-intensive world. People at risk are women, children, and people of color, single-parent families, and the elderly. Large numbers of the nation's citizens live at or below the poverty threshold, which...
