“History and Background”

Pakistan came into being in 1947 when Britain declared India independent and announced two successor states, India and Pakistan. Created to meet the demands of Muslim Indians for a separate state, Pakistan initially included two Muslim areas one on the western side of India the other on the east. Tensions between East and West Pakistan ended in civil war and the split of East Pakistan to form Bangladesh in 1971.

Pakistan is a Muslim country and Islam is the official religion. Islam is the religion which is professed and practiced by the people of Pakistan. The majority of Pakistanis are Muslims and many customs follow from that faith. For example, Muslims may only eat halal meat and Pakistani recipes reflect this. Major festivals such as Lailat al Qadr, Eid-ul Adha and Eid ul Fitr come from the Islamic calendar.
