Employer-Employee Relations

The relationship between an employer and an employee is one that makes a major impact on any organization. Employers must take care of, and respect, their employees in order to have employees that take care of, and respect, their company. But not all employees are created equal. In this paper we will be discussing the corporation giant, Wal-Mart, and some of their employer-employee relations. First, we will begin with an overview of Wal-Mart employer relations policies. Then we will discuss Regular Employees versus Temporary Employees, Exempt Employees versus Non-Exempt Employees, and Employment-At-Will.

Overview of Wal-Mart employer relations policies

Based on the ideals of Sam Walton, Wal-Mart founder, respect for the individual is the key to success. That individual respect is expected to be given to customers as well as employees every time interaction occurs between two or more people. Wal-Mart believes that everyone matters and the strength of diversity increases when every associate is encouraged to meet his or her potential (Diversity, 2008).

The Effective Leadership in a Diverse and Inclusive Environment (ELDIE) program provides a forum for education on diversity for leaders with four actionable goals based around developing key diversity and inclusion messages and strategies for each business unit with action plans. Also, ELDIE measures engagement of leadership, retention, and development of best practices. They also focus on current diversity trends (Diversity, 2008).

In 2006 Wal-Mart created the Employment Practices Advisory Panel (EPAP) to evaluate and guide employment practices and diversity ad inclusion initiatives. This panel releases quarterly updates and best practices recommendations to the board of directors. In 2008 this panel led associate focus groups, helped develop diversity strategies, and facilitated benchmarking meetings with corporate leaders like McDonald’s, PepsiCo and DiversityInc magazine...
