Q2. Describe how you think new cadets at the ADF 'learn' the culture

New cadets at the ADF may struggle to belong in the force as the culture could be foreign and difficult to perceive; therefore through education, new cadets can effectively and efficiently adapt to the new way of life.

Culture is defined as shared values, beliefs, and traditions that influence the behaviours of members of a particular group. (J. Brown, 2008, pp 137)

New cadets should be challenged, as well as motivated, to become involved in the force and committed to learn the new way of life through being open and trusting of the various people.

Conflict resolution and debates should and must be sought out to make decisions and resolve issues concerning differing opinions.

Cadets should be outgoing and friendly to be able to work in a socially diverse environment and learn about a different culture. Good listening skills is effective for communicating messages and ensuring all parties understand what is being told; which in turn, helps to learn about a culture.

Stories, rituals, material symbols as well as learning the language are great ways for recent members to accommodate and adapt to the new lifestyle.

Stories are important to hear and learn as they tell of the way of life of culture and history passed on from generation to generation as well as time changes. Stories can be old through images, campfire nights, orientation days and partners in the Australian Defence Force.

Rituals help recent ADF people to feel a sense of belonging to the culture and adopt a new lifestyle. ADF could have initiation ceremonies and welcoming/educational rituals for new cadets to learn the culture.
