The role of leadership and how it can impact Organizational Performance

“Never leave your wingman” this phrase crossed my mind because Mr. Mulally came from Boeing, an aircraft background. Leadership is vitally important to the organizational performance. When leaders manage their own behavior, when they coach effectively, direct and inspire their teams, they not only deliver results through their team – they boost engagement and commitment across the organization (Hay Group, 2010). This contributes to the overall performance of the organization.

Mulally’s leadership style impacted Ford greatly and demanded change. Since he became CEO in 2006, he has made a number of changes to the company. Ford has come from the brinks of bankruptcy or government takeover to becoming the American Car Manufacturer with a global future. Although we are in an economic recession, Ford is moving toward becoming successful and making a profit once again.

Mulally’s Leadership Style and how his actions fit this style

“Alan’s style is pretty relentless (pg. 543).” I feel that his style is that of a transformational leader. Hellriegel and Slocum states that transformational leadership involves anticipating future trends, inspiring followers to understand and embrace a new vision of possibilities, developing others to be leaders or better leaders, and building the organization or group into a community of challenged and rewarded learners. Visionary, inspiring, daring and ethical are words that describe transformational leaders (pg. 329). Mulally entered into Ford leading the organization with the decide style of leadership.
