Student's Name:. Title of Article: ROWE Program at Best Buy. Date: 3/14/11

ROWE stands for Results-Only Work Environment. In a ROWE, each individual has the ability to basically do whatever they please, whenever they want under on condition, they must get their work done. One authentic ROWE company is a Fortune 100 retailer, Best Buy Co, Inc. , At this organization all of the the old rules that would normally govern a traditional work environment such as core hours, face to face meetings, etc. have been replaced by one simple rule: focus only on results. One of the misconceptions about ROWE is that it is a similar to a work-from-home program since there are no rules or guidelines and it is strictly based on perfomance. However, the question in a ROWE is not where are the employees but is the work getting done.

Best Buy culture has changed tremendously due to the implemetation of ROWE. The company’s culture once had to embrace long hours and sacrifice and now the culture is more relaxed. The employees now have ability to run and take control of their own schedule as well as their own work progress. Although I can say the ROWE program is a good idea but the rules and principles are very lenient which could pose an issue. Managers are responsible for establishing processes and setting goals and employees are responsible for meeting them. Managers also had to give up some of there control since there is less regulation on employees. In a ROWE, employees are free to work when and where they want, as long as the job gets done. Meeting attendance is optional since the only concern that matters are the results. According to surveys ROWE allows employees to have better relationships with family and friends and feel more focused and energized about their work. I think that Best Buy has benefited from this change by allowing employees more flexibilty and freedom.
