Abstract

Nutritionists are professionals that use nutritional guidelines to promote healthy lifestyles and disease prevention through balance of foods. Nutritionists can work in a variety of settings, such as schools, hospitals and correctional facilities, and they do a range of jobs from individual consultation, to meal planning, to budgeting for food. Nutritionists are required to have a Bachelor’s Degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, food service systems management, and licensure and certification vary by state. Nutritionists can work as middle managers in places such as school systems, hospitals, and food service companies. The responsibilities of a nutritionist can include meal planning and budgeting and overseeing meal preparation.

Nutritionist Role Profile

Nutritionists are health care professionals that focus on the prevention and treatment of illnesses through proper dietary care. Nutritionists emphasize balance of nutrition and control of the intake of food as excellent ways to fight, or prevent, health problems. According to the Princeton Review nutritionists usually work in one of three areas: clinical, community, or administrative management. Clinical nutritionists create nutritional programs for individuals in institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, day care centers, and prisons (No Author, The Princeton Review, 2008). Community nutritionists work for health clinics, clubs, agencies, and HMOs to provide information and advise on the nutritional practices that will promote good health. Community nutritionists can also work for families, in which they provide guidance for meals, including specializing meals for family members, and making up shopping lists (No Author, The Princeton Review, 2008).
