As the chief editor of a newspaper of a large metropolitan daily newspaper, having a
reporter caught fabricating sources and making up facts. I would have cause to call the accused
reporter into my office where we could discuss the issue in private. First I would start the
conversation by explaining the role of delivering the news to the public and what it means. I
would then explain that we have a responsibility to the public to ensure that all of our
information is factual and that we need to have credible sources to back up all of our
information. Also that there are strict time deadlines that our reporters are expected to have their
information turned in by to compete with other papers. However, our top concern always needs
to be the accuracy of the information we are providing. Our social responsibility to that of the
news media is that, which allows for freedom of speech. When you are writing for a newspaper
you have to keep your own opinions to a minimum and write the facts as they are presented. The importance of this is because no one in the world would know what is really going on if people
only wrote their own opinions on everything. Media has a responsibility to the public to give
them the right information, no matter what personal opinions they may have on the topic. Do not
get me wrong; their opinions can be made without falsifying information. There are many
different forms of media out there and to stay in competition can be very difficult. You have to
be the first there with the information. The news has to be accurate. It is hard enough as a
newspaper to stay ahead in the game especially with the advancements in the last century.
Advantages of these other types of media are that they put up to date information in your hands
via phone, computer, television, print, and radio. Getting your information from these sources
can be so much faster than waiting for the daily newspaper. It used to be that the newspaper...
