My current place of employment is an organization that focuses on itself. Of course, in every organization there must be some aspect of the “company” or organization being more important than any one employee or individual. But, my current employer takes this concept much too far.

I work in a culture that has a set of values that looks totally inward and virtually ignores important concepts of individuality of the people making up the organization and even the outward growth and public perception.

Aside from the general atmosphere, my employer discourages any suggestions or ideas from employees. That creates a feeling that those of us who actually do the day to day work, are valueless and do not know enough to have an idea that is worth listening to.

Similarly, there is little impetus to change the makeup of the workforce, or the “way we do things.” Change is inevitable, of course. But, the new employees seem to be mirror-images of the out-going employees. New people who do not fit into this cookie-cutter organization do not stay long. These are people that often could make a very positive difference, but do not stay long enough. They do not, apparently, feel that they are wanted or needed.

No matter what the circumstances of the work involved, the organization promotes the idea that we will keep doing things the same way they have always been done. New methods and new information is actually discouraged. We are often told these things do not support the goals of our company. Like individuals, organizations can take on characteristics that are detrimental and hinder growth. An organization that does nothing but look “inward” is definitely a prime example.

Working at a place such as this, it is difficult to maintain the “team spirit” that I know I should probably have. It would make my workday more enjoyable at the very least, to be able to feel a part of an organization that cares about each individual, while also looking towards...
