With our country struggling financially and middle class Americans living pay check to pay check, and homes foreclosing by the hundreds day by day. Could this financial catastrophe been prevented by something as simple as not allow credit card companies to target our youth. Are freshman college students equipped to with the knowledge to fully understand the effects that this could have in the future? Do college students comprehend interest rates and hidden fees that these companies are offering? Should college and universities allow credit card companies to market on their campus and do they receive anything in return.

The average student that graduates from high school and enters into college is between the ages of 17-19. Your first two years of college can be very difficult. Getting used to a new environment and most times your faraway from home with little to no income. The requirements for a college student are extremely low. A student with no credit history and an inconsistent job history can be approved for a credit in as little as five minutes. While a middle age adult with a fair credit rating and a good job history can be declined or have a high interest rate. This does not seem fair and it seems as if the credit card companies are targeting our youth at one of the most vulunerable times. Being 18 years old and in college does not necessarily mean you are mentally an adult. Students do not fully understand what they have signed nor are they financially able to pay credit bills. Depending on your major and if you plan to continue on past your bachelors degree you could leave school with loans anywhere from $15-20 thousand dollars in debt just from furthering your education. The average job pays around $32-40 thousand a year for college graduates. Is it really feasible for a 22 year old to pay back credit card debit, student loan debit and live in comfortably?...
