By now, everyone has heard about the woman who sued McDonalds after scalding herself with hot coffee, or the lawyer who sued a local drycleaners for $65 million dollars after they lost a pair of his suit pants. Although manufacturers and businesses must be held liable for negligence, we as consumers need to be responsible for our own actions, and use common sense when using products or services. Frivolous lawsuits are hurting our economy as a whole; job loss, higher insurance rates, increase in product cost, among others. There are Consumer Protection Acts and Product Liability Laws that are needed in order to protect the consumer, but there also needs to be better legislation put in place to protect the livelihood of business owners as well.
