Mitosis and Meiosis Checkpoint

In order to understand why the process of Mitosis and Meiosis are both important a person needs to understand what each of these are and what their function is. Mitosis is the cell process of growth and division. Every living organism begins with one cell, this first cell is then divided into two cells, often called daughter cells. There are six phases in Mitosis. They are Interphase, ( which is normal cell function and the chromosomes duplicate), Prophase (when the chromosomes pair up), Metaphase, (this is when the chromosomes line up on the middle of the cell), Anaphase, (the chromosomes separated to opposite sides of the cell), Telephase, (the nuclear membranes reappear and cell membranes start to divide), Cytokinesis, (the cell membrane divides cells into two cells. Also known as the daughter cells).

Meiosis is the production of sperm and egg cells. Each cell has to go through the division process twice in order for the cell to end up with half the number of chromosomes.

So now to answer the question why are Mitosis and Meiosis important? Without Mitosis cells would die because Mitosis is the division of cells. Meiosis is important because this is the process where it produces sex cells which enables the organisms to reproduce.

An organism would need to undergo Mitosis when cells die off to produce more cells. A good example would be the hair and skin cells. When these die off new cells take their place. Meiosis happens when cells need to reproduce.

If Meiosis did not happen, reproduction would not happen and organisms would die off.
