Dehydration

Now before we get started on this paper i am going to run some statistics by you about dehydration. How these are by no means fact, just some interesting things i found when researching this paper.

Elderly dehydration is one of the most common reasons for hospitalization among people over 65. In fact about one half of those hospitalized for dehydration die within one year.

About 37% of hospital episodes for fluid loss were for men: 63% were for women.

The average adult loses 10 cups of fluid a day through sweating, exhaling, urinating and bowel movements. Some more water is lost thru other means.

We are mostly water - about 70 of the human body is made of water.

Now that i have you thinking lets talk about dehydration and how its effects you and your family. I asked my family and friends yesterday how much water they drank through out the day, almost all of them said they same think, "I don’t drink water. But i drink other things like soda and coffee." Sad think is most people you know don’t drink enough water. Generally people think drinking coffee or drinking that soda they are giving there body enough water, but they truth is they are not. They are just heading towards dehydration.

Dehydration is the process that happens when your system is losing more fluids then what has been replenished by drinking water. The best and easiest method of keeping one from becoming dehydrated is prevention, by maintaining a steady supply of fluids, these fluids can be sports drinks or water. Liquid intake is a necessity for the body because it helps to maintain an appropriate level of fluid to solid balance. Since of our body is primarily composed of water, a healthy and well regulated body requires at least 10 cups of water daily to function. A couple of examples of why water helps our bodies is functions such as: water lubricates and cleans the eyes, helps food break down while you are chewing through a saliva mixture, and it lubricates the joints...
