Industrial/ Organizational Psychology

Industrial Organizational Psychology is the science of human, and nonhuman behavior, cognition, emotion, and motivation (Spector, 2008). To take a step a further, Industrial Organizational Psychology is also the branch of psychology that employs psychological concepts and principals to organizations. In addition, this discipline concentrates on boosting work productivity as well as associated issues such as both mental and physical wellbeing of individuals within in the workplace. Furthermore, researchers from this field implemented a wide range of tasks that would encompass researching individuals’ attitudes, behaviors, and judgments as well as assessing companies or managing leadership training by using surveys, experiments, quasi-experiments, and observational studies. Researchers in this field discovered that the use of these results as well as diverse data sources that consist of historical databases, objective measures of work performance, and questionnaires found to be very efficient as well as effective.

Industrial Organizational Psychology is a twentieth century invention with roots in the late 1800s and early 1900s and has existed almost from the beginning of the psychology field (Spector, 2008). However, the beginning for industrial organizational psychology manifested during the First World War. Walter Dill Scott was this man who spearheaded the use of this psychology and the reason most in the field of Industrial Organizational Psychology would view Scott as a pioneer of this field. His concepts, knowledge, and the controlled experiment method of this new field of psychology toward business and corporation allowed Scott to illustrate that he was well prepared to examine, gauge, and apply the aptitudes and abilities of large numbers of people.
