Men and Women of America have been tailored to trust all suture financial retirement security in the Social Security Administration. What they have not been informed of is the full amount of benefits given to a retiree at a fulfilled retirement age. The government has conditioned us as a society to rely on this retirement system, when in fact the benefits will not allow a sustainable lifestyle. This would cause retirees to go back to work or struggle in their later years. It is possible for the average American, young or old, male or female to plan for a secure financial retirement.

The Social Security Unreliability

Americans cannot rely on the Social Security System because there are a very large amount of retirees rapidly depleting the Social Security Administrations trust fund, our government is far in debt, and Social Security payments are not substantial enough to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. The book The Tragedy of Pudd'Nhead Wilson (Mark Twain; 1894) says “Put not all thine eggs in the one basket.” This is an idiomatic phrase that means one should not focus all of his attention on one hope, possibility or avenue of success. This is a true idiomatic phrase for the situation we as Americans are put in by our flawed retirement system. The Social Security Website itself says that there is a large need for change in Americans Retirement design (Trustees Report, 2011). In the summary of the 2011 annual reports for social security and Medicare by the Board of Trustees, they report that the Social Security and Medicare programs remain challenging (SSA.gov). However, the Social Security Administration insists that the government will have enough money to pay out full benefits until 2036 (Trustees Report, 2011).
