The Four Functions of Management

Many organizations have to flow in the right direction in order to achieve the goals and objectives that have been set forth. In order to do so, the organization must execute concepts in order to improve management. For most organizations, there are four functions of management. I will define each of the four functions of management, they include, planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. I will also explain how each function relates to the working environment within the corporate world.

Planning

Planning is defined as, “specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals,” (Bateman & Snell, 2007). By planning ahead and setting specific goals for the company in advance management is making a legitimate attempt at making their firm as successful as possible. In business a manager must always realize that very little remains the same. They must be able and willing to change with the times, this includes having a plan and vision for the future. Analyzing, setting goals and objectives, and choosing strategies are some examples of planning. “Plans set the stage for action and for major achievements,” (Bateman & Snell, p. 17). Within my own organization, planning is imperative when working within a corporation. Management must always be current on new services that are being offered to remain competitive. This includes constant hiring, communication, and training, all of which take a great deal of planning.

Organizing

Organizing is, “assembling and coordinating the human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals,” (Bateman & Snell, 17).
