Mental Models

Mental models, according to Stephen Robbins and Timothy Judge, in the textbook Organizational Behavior, are the knowledge and beliefs teams utilize to define the way work is completed (2009). Teams may develop different mental models and different ways to handle situations. They may sometimes get into arguments and place their attention on the argument as opposed to focusing on the situation that needs to be accomplished. Romans 8:28, King James edition, read “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Working together results in goals being accomplished, while working against each other results in discord. Some believe that criticism and conflict destroys group dynamics. In fact, it promotes better opportunities it formulated appropriately and constructively.

Grapevine

The grapevine is an informal source of information used in organizations. A great deal of information is retrieved through the grapevine and employees sometimes use this as their means of acquiring information. There are times, however, when the information received is not accurate. Robbins and Judge maintain that three characteristics of the grapevine exist. Namely, management does not control the grapevine, employees perceive it as a reliable source of information, and it serves the interests of those within it (2009). The New International Version of Leviticus 19:16 reads, “Do not go about spreading slander among your people. Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life. I am the Lord.” The grapevine is a powerful tool that is widely used and often is comprised of information that is untrue. As a result of the grapevine, rumors run rampant in organizations.
