The trip to the Batesville Casket Company was very interesting. I was able to learn many things that I had not known before this trip. I had never been exposed to, first hand, on how hardwood caskets are made. Being able to watch the machines, the people, and the final product getting made was very eye-opening. I learned a bit about the background of the company and how it started. The Batesville Casket Company has been in existence for 77 years. It has been owned by the Herb family since its existence. They specialize in the fabrication of hardwood caskets. Their catalog features hundreds of designs including their Conventional, Orthodox and Octagon style caskets. In addition, they specialize in the fabrication of custom design caskets with unlimited resources for designing material.

I was immediately impressed by the machinery, skills, and labor involved at Batesville Casket Company. It is obvious that the workers take great pride in the work that they do. The machines are highly specialized, with each machine having its own distinct function. It is clear that the workers are highly specialized and experts in what they do as well. Precision, consistency and safety seem to be extremely important. These elements lead to an excellent product, defined by its superior craftsmanship.

We had a special experience on our trip. Although Batesville Casket Company specializes in hardwood caskets, we were able to observe a special project that they are working on for the NFDA conference. My trip to the Batesville Casket Company gave me a greater appreciation for casket production. The people are just as important as the machines, making the production of these caskets a unique relationship and prideful experience. Only having seen the final product of caskets before, this experience changed my views of casket making. I now have a new love for hardwood caskets and hope to sell many of them in the near future.
