Business Communication Trends

The world is changing, from medical procedures to renewable energy breakthroughs and from information technology to scientific knowledge. Something that is changing and continues to change that affects everyone in the business world is the business communication trends. These trends can have a significant impact on a business oftentimes changing the way a business conducts itself.

Business communication dominates my day-to-day activities at work. Every day orders are placed and orders are received via e-mail, questions and inquiries are received and answers are sent, and e-mail is used to send memorandums and official correspondences. Text messages are sent to employees working in the field to give them technical information that they request. The organization uses PDAs to generate Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and send them to the appropriate government agencies to report production data. Recently, members of the management team were given company issued iPads to be used for business purposes while they are out of the office traveling at trade shows, meetings, and seminars. These devices help to manage daily work activities by allowing communication with people both in and out of the office, whether I am or out of the office, in a number of ways. In addition they allow me to keep and manage calendars and daily planners electronically. This is especially helpful when working from home as all of the materials and information I need to perform my job can easily be accessed from anywhere there is a computer.

The business communication trends I have observed in my organization are technology changes, including information overload and data security versus privacy; focus on quality and customers needs, teamwork, diversity, legal and ethical concerns, balancing work and family, and job flexibility (Locker & Kienzler, 2008).
