September 11, 2001 is a day vividly etched in most American’s memory. Nineteen Islamic militants associated with the extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airlines and carried out terrorist attacks against our country. The attackers boarded four airplanes and soon after takeoff disabled the crews and took control of the planes. The first plane crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, and the second plane struck the south tower 15 minutes later. The attacks, referred to most often as 9/11, resulted in extensive death and destruction. The third plane crashed into the southwest side of the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. The last airplane crashed into a Pennsylvania field. Within a couple of hours, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center collapsed and the death toll rose. Fires smoldered for more than three months after the attack, and almost three thousand people lost their lives. .
Our government gathered evidence the al-Qaeda was responsible for the horrific attacks. Combating terrorism became the focus of United States foreign policy and security measures were tightened in airports and government buildings. Although this was a devastating and sorrowful time in American history our country and our citizens bonded together to support each other and rebuild. Donations poured in, citizens became part of search and recovery efforts, and we became a united front. Well, most of the country rallied together. Unfortunately, one group of our citizens became the face of the enemy, and their lives have been forever changed.
