Introduction to Marketing

In 1965, DuPont laboratories created a material called Kevlar, Kevlar is a material used in bulletproof vest. It was not until 1975 that the bulletproof vest design was first tested by law enforcement officers in field training. Three years later, in 1998, the U.S military began to use Kevlar in flight jackets. The design of the bulletproof vest was upgraded to withstand shrapnel from bombs and grenades. Soon after a form of bullet and stab proof vest were created for correctional officers.

The vest is designed of cotton or nylon which is a standard fabric, and the Kevlar material is inserted into the vest for easy replacement or maybe sewn into the vest. The Kevlar material is shaped like a spider web, so when a bullet strikes the vest, it hits multilayer’s of Kevlar material. The spider webs in the Kevlar layers catch and stop the bullet from penetrating the woven fabrics, therefore protecting the wearer from harm.

Kevlar is also used on a personal level in everyday wear, and is made to protect and stop small to medium caliber bullets. These vest are flexible and more lightweight then the ones used by law enforcement. The ones used by law enforcement are designed to withstand bullets form most handguns and shotguns. The body armor of the military is made to resist bullets as well as grenade shrapnel and other ballistic threats.

DuPont and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has signed an contractual agreement to develop insulation for their new launch vehicle ARES1; due to replace the space shuttle and all other future spacecrafts.

In March 2003, DuPont and NASA began testing of foams with Kevlar. This followed the Columbia Space Shuttle, February of that year, fatal accident.
