Cloud Computing: A Remarkable Achievement

Section I: Introduction

There have been some remarkable achievements in the 20th century, and into the 21st century. The Internet was one of the biggest achievements of the 20th century, which opened the door for new technologies such as Cloud Computing. Cloud Computing has become a remarkable advancement in today’s information technology age. Cloud Computing is a, “flexible and scalable shared environment in which third-party suppliers use virtualization technologies to create and distribute computing resources to customers on an as-needed basis, through Internet browser.” (Velez, 2009, Engineering & Technology, pg. 11) Cloud Computing technology also reduces costs for businesses, as well as improved production. This research paper will discuss the following aspects of Cloud Computing including defining in detail Cloud Computing including virtualization, it will discuss the immediate and direct benefits of this achievement, identify and discuss particular scientific research efforts at industrial, national and/or university research labs, and offer one or more examples of challenges believed to warrant high priority attention and research in IT today.

Section II: Cloud Computing-A Remarkable Technology

Cloud Computing, as stated previously, has become one of the most remarkable achievements of the 21st century. In 1990, Bill Gates then CEO of Microsoft, gave a keynote speech when he declared that the, “PC industry would produce advances within a few years that would put information at people’s fingertips,” to get there he said, “the world needed three things: a more “personal” personal computer, more powerful communications network, and easy access to a broad range of information.” (Gates, 2009, Business Week) Today, his vision came true with the advent of Cloud Computing. A technology that connects a vast array of interconnected computers providing data and software to the masses.
