Effects of Stress

1. What steps of the general adaptation syndrome will I experience?

Given the scenario at hand, I believe that my body will begin to start all of the steps that are associated with the general adaptation syndrome. Regardless of knowing I am going to have an increased workload, doubts about the ability of meeting all deadlines and completing any additional tasks. In knowing that I am dealing with an increased workload, my body is in the first stage: the alarm reaction; this stage prepares the body for stressors.

2. What emotional and cognitive effects might this stressor produce?

Because of the stress from the increased workload and having to meet certain deadlines have already raised some questions to whether it will all get done. Depression and anxiety are connected to the doubt factor causing emotional and cognitive effects. From the beginning of the assignment that is at hand until the assignment is complete will cause great anxiety. If the deadline is not met at the time allotted this can cause depression to set in.

3. If this stress continues, how might it affect my health?

If the stress continues the immune system will be affected not only in emotional or cognitive effects. Our bodies are outfitted with antibodies and any added stress can cause large amounts of secreted steroids that destroy the body’s antibody supply. Antibodies are in the body that helps to fight off viruses and once these antibodies are destroyed it will be harder to fight off the viruses. More stress will be added because there is no way to fight off the infections.

Researching helpful tips on how to stay organized and getting assignments that have deadlines done in a timely fashion will help to eliminate the stressors. In addition to helpful tips finding a social support group to reduce stress would help a great deal....
