Abstract

The number of computing and telecommunications devices is increasing and

consequently, the focus on how to connect them to each other. The usual solution is to connect the devices with a cable or use infrared light to make file transfer and synchronization possible. The cable solution is often complicated since it may require a cable specific to the devices being connected as well as configuration software. The infrared solution eliminates the cable, but requires line of sight. To solve these problems an emerging technology, Bluetooth, was developed. It provides the means for a short-range radio link solution. This solution makes it possible to transmit signals over short distances between broadband access devices, telephones, PCs, information appliances and other devices. It is the result of a co-operative effort among over 2000 companies all working for a cheap, simple, and low power-consuming solution with broad market support. The interesting name “Bluetooth” comes from Harald Bluetooth, the Viking who in the 10th century unified Norway and Denmark. (Tulloch & Tulloch, 2005, p. 170) This paper will discuss how Bluetooth works, its adoption throughout the computer and telecommunications industry, its advantages and the impact it is having and will continue to have on many other industries on a global scale.
