Management and Leadership

What is the difference between management and leadership? There is a large difference between the two. Management is a position or title and can be given to anyone. The title alone does not make one a lender. A manager is a person who has control over something, such as a business, department, or division. A manager controls or manipulates assets and resources in an attempt to reach goals. To define leadership, we need to go into more depth.

“A leader is one who influences other to attain goals” (Bateman & Snell, p. 434, 2009). An effective leader can combine good business sense with interpersonal skills to attain goals set by the company. In other words, a good leader can use interpersonal skills to influence followers in ways that benefit the organization. Due to the fact that many leaders have multiple followers, a leader needs to be able to influence many different personalities.

So how do leaders influence followers? People expect their leaders to help them achieve goals and understand their job duties. People expect leaders to help them develop their skills so that they can perform better. People want to eventually become leader or improve positions and count on leaders to show them how to get there. People also expect to be treated equally and with respect by their leaders. Leaders can do all of this while keeping followers moving in a desired direction.

On a personal level, leaders need to operate in ways that best suit the needs of the company. Sometimes this means curbing one’s own emotions, goals, and even beliefs. Leaders need to be able to create positive change, inspire other, lead by example, and constantly motivate his or her followers.
