Business Communication Trends Paper

Effective communication within a workplace is an ongoing and necessary part of every business. I have been working in either a military or law enforcement capacity for the past 17 years. Nine years was spent in the US Army as a Military Police Officer and over the past 8 years, I have worked as a Police Officer in the City of Rio Vista. Business communication within the Rio Vista Police Department has been an essential part of my role as a Patrol Supervisor. I was recently assigned a task by the Rio Vista City Manager, who asked me to effectively communicate to him my concerns for our Police Department in 2011. My task was to effectively communicate my departments, lack of funding, patrol responsibilities and ultimately a solution to these issues. In the following, I will explain the business communication method I used, while presenting my supervisor with these concerns I had in our department.

I titled this plan the “More With Less Operational Plan - Maintaining The Essential Functions of Rio Vista Police Department”

I first put some thought into the conversation I had with both the City Manager and my patrol staff. The concerns were mostly in regards to staffing, accountability and more or less doing more with less.

I advised him that I also spoke with members of our department in regards to what officers would like to see happen within our police department. After speaking amongst my peers, I felt that before any serious changes would occur, we would first make some changes to our past practices. Many of these needed changes were simple and only needed to be established and put into motion.
