In philosophic terms, what is the difference between an adjustic thrust, and an adjustment? Are these events necessarily connected? If so, how are they connected, and if not, how might either happen without the other?

An adjustic thrust is a force applied either by the doctor or an instrument. The adjustment is the change to the body due to the force being applied. Stedman’s Dictionary defines an adjustment, in terms of dentistry, “as any modification made to a fixed or removable prosthesis during or after its insertion to perfect its adaptation and function.” (pg. 30). Because Chiropractors are using the thrust to make the change in the body, I do agree that these events are connected.

If the body needs to adapt to either mechanical and/or chemical stresses, an evaluation whether or not to apply that force should be determined. While dentistry has its own philosophy, I found it interesting that different parts of the body can be referenced as needing forces to ‘perfect its adaptation and function’.

I think that’s why an adjustic thrust and adjustment are connected because if the thrust is not done correctly nor is it specific, damage to the tissues may occur. Herbst Gonstead Chapters textbook reinforces this point, noting adjustments to the pelvic region, “There may also be local inflammatory and compressive effects on the tissues within the pelvic cavity, resulting in functional and pathological disorders of those tissues” (pg. 181). Even if the adjustment could happen without the adjustic thrust, I think we live in a world such that everyday our bodies need to adapt to the environment that we purposely put ourselves in. Having the option to maintain the function of our nervous system and its supporting structures by a trained professional should be a discussion with everyone and their healthcare provider.

With obesity and ‘couch potato’ lifestyles becoming more prevalent, having the body hold its adjustment after the adjustic thrust is given might...
