Diagnosis and Treatment

There is a wide range of psychological disorders recognized in the United States and around the world as of to date. The one that I have chosen to write about in detail is schizophrenic disorders. One misperception is that it means split personality when in reality that is not the case, it has even been recognized in the medical field that this disorder is a dissociative identity disorder (G & A, 2002). This disorder is mainly thought to affect cognition, but it usually contributes to problems with emotions and behavior. Schizophrenia has been stated to be a challenging disorder, research has shown that this disorder makes it difficult for a person to distinguish between what is real and unreal, manage emotions, think clearly, and relate to other people. There are also obstacles when dealing with this disorder that can get in the way of a person’s ability to take care of themselves in order to function normally in real-life situations.

Most documented cases of schizophrenia show that it normally appears in a person’s late teens are early adulthood. For women the average age of onset is around the age of 30 for men it’s typically around the age of 25. However, it is also a known fact that it can appear for the first time around middle age are even later years. There has even been rare cases reported of young children and adolescent being affected by this disorder. Although, this disorder doesn’t discriminate it tends to be more severe in man than in women (John Hopkins Medicine, 2011). People with schizophrenia may see are hear things that doesn’t exist, believe that others are trying to hurt them, or feel like they are constantly being watched. Because of these problems they usually cannot live normal lives unless they are successfully treated with medications are some other treatment approach (G & A, 2002).
