The Works of Bramante

The importance of architecture of Bramante was based on humanistic values of the day, according to ancient Roman statues. An example of this style is “the small architectural gem known as the Tempietto on the Janiculum hill overlooking the Vatican” (Kleiner, 2010, p. 475). This statue got its name because it looked like a little ancient temple. “This place is where Saint Peter’s crucifixion took place” (Kleiner, 2010, p. 475).

In addition, “Bramante planned, but never executed, a circular colonnaded courtyard to frame the “temple” (Kleiner, 2010, pp. 475-476). However, one of the many differences between the Early and High Renaissance styles of architecture is the former’s emphasis on detailing flat wall surfaces versus the latter’s sculptural handling of architectural masses” (Kleiner, 2010, p. 477). “Bramante’s Tempeitto initiated the beginning of the

High Renaissance” (Kleiner, 2010, p. 477). Bramante is considered “the first to bring back to light the good and beautiful architectural that from antiquity to that time had been hidden” (Kleiner, 2010, p. 477). He was noted as “the architect selected by Julius II to design a replacement for the Constantinian Basilician church” (Kleiner, 2010, p. 477). The Saint Peter statue represented the church, and what it stood for.

Also, he originally desined the new Saint Peter’s that consisted of a cross with arms of equal length, each terminating in an apse. “He also designed much of the Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro in Milan” (Kleiner, 200, p. 477).

Additionally, he is “responsible for the essential proportions of the east end, and his design influenced the appearance of many smaller churches” (6th edition, 2010, p. 1). He also took “philosophical ideas and practices relating to global knowledge and vision and placed them in his paintings to make them come to life” (Cosgrove,...
