Organizational Behavior Terminology and Concepts

Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn (2008) describe organizational behavior as the study of human behavior, the understanding of group and individual behavior, interpersonal processes, and organizational dynamics with a goal of improving an organization’s performance as well as the people within them. Organizational behavior is also an academic discipline that scientists study. Companies also use it to research and observe the behavior of individuals in an organization. The organizational behaviors study makes it easier for us to comprehend the thought process as well as how they interact with each other and how they behave. Like any other goal a company has, the goal of studying behavior is to come up with ideas on how to improve the company’s and employees’ overall performance. There are many factors that influence the culture and behavior of organizations such as organizational culture, organizational behavior, diversity, and communication. This paper will explain how the organizational behavior components influence an organization in today’s environment.

All organizations create their own culture. From within the company they try to build the culture. The goal is to have a well supported and communicated culture that supports the organization’s vision. The collection of shared beliefs is what organizational culture is known as. Organizations with a similar constructive culture like AT&T’s are potentially highly motivated companies that are performance based. The employees constantly work together to achieve its goals. Employees tend to feel better about their selves in this type of culture. There also tends to be more job satisfaction. Some organizations like Toyota have more of an aggressive/defensive culture.
