Part I

Write a summary of 350-700 words identifying the contributions of Freud, Jung, and Rogers.

Freud, Jung, and Rogers were fundamental psychological theorists whom made a large impact on psychology, as we know it. Each contributed in his own unique way and although their views and theories differed in some ways, they were similar in others. The biggest similarity of the three is that they all supported the unconscious state of a person’s personality.

Freud

Freud’s contributions include neurology, neuropathology, and anesthesia Freud's theories and views of psychotherapy focused on the role of the unconscious in directing behavior, particularly sexual behavior. He believed that the unconscious was the largest part of the mind. Freud considered humans to be primarily motivated by sexual and aggressive impulses and the pursuit of pleasure that is driven by the unconscious structure he named “id”. He believed “the mind is divided into three parts called the id, the ego and the superego” (Morris & Maisto, 2002, p. 419). The id as Freud believed is the root of drives for pleasure, the ego is the rational part of the mind and the superego served to balance the needs of both. According to his theory, the “id”, the “ego” and the “superego” are the fundamental sources for all human motivations (Morris & Maisto, 2002). According to Freud’s beliefs, “The id is the only component of personality that is present from birth. This aspect of personality is entirely unconscious and includes signs of the instinctive and primitive behaviors. According to Freud, the id is the source of all psychic energy, making it the primary component of personality” (Van Wagner, n.d).

Jung
