CHAPTER ONE

1.1 DESCRIPTION OF MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF MACHAKOS

MACHAKOS TOWN (BACKGROUND AND HISTORY)

1.1.1 LOCATION

Machakos Town is located in Eastern Province 64 km South East of Nairobi City on the edge of Kapiti plains. It is 16 km from main Nairobi –Mombasa trunk road.

1.1.2 EVOLUTION

The origin of the Town dates back to 1889, when the Imperial British East Africa Company (IBES), the predecessor of the British Colonial Authority in Kenya established their first upcountry station. In 1892 it became the capital and centre of operation of Imperial British East Africa Company (IBEA).It was named after Masaku- the Local Leader who welcomed the white men in the area.

In 1906, Machakos was declared a Township. In 1954, it was elevated to Urban Council status covering an area of 19km2. In 1980.Machakos was elevated to the Municipal Council status covering an area of 519km2. It was further extended to capture Konza area which is within Kimutwa Ward. The acreage increase to 578 Km2. The growth of Machakos Town was slowed down by the shifting of IBEA base to Nairobi and the by-passing of Nairobi-Mombasa main trunk road and Mombasa-Nairobi-Kisumu railway line. In 1984-1988, development plan for Kenya, Machakos Town was identified as one of the medium Towns targeted for development in order to offset the pressure of rural-urban migration being experienced by the capital Nairobi.

1.1.3 BOUNDARIES

Machakos Town bounded on the Northern side of Kamuthanga Hill, Kenol, Mua hills, Kitanga Settlement area, Konza railway station (Kajiado District), Mombasa road at Konza ranch, Kyawalia (Southern) to Kiundwani Market, Makaveti market down to Maanzoni market. It runs down to Ikiwe River then upto Kaseve Market. Iveti Hills through Kusyomuomo (Eastern) Market then to Thinu Market in Ngelani Location.
