Part One

As the chief editor of a large metropolitan newspaper, I am obligated go back threw the work of the reporter in question and find what stories have been fabricated. Once I have done this and have the information in front of me that shows what stories were fabricated I would bring the reporter into my office. I need to let the reporter know that this is not acceptable. They will be dismissed from the company for their behavior. The reporter would be required to write a formal letter of apology to the public that they have fabricated the story and made up facts. I would also require that a press and interview conference be held to address the public of the situation that has taken place. A reporter has the responsibility of making sure that the information that they are writing is factual and unbiased. According to the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, it states a journalist should be honest, fair, and courageous in gathering, reporting, and interpreting information. It would be my responsibility as the editor in chief to terminate employment of the reporter that has been fabricating and making up facts on a story that has been written. I would not be allowed to have the reporter continue work because this would show that I am stating it is appropriate to allow this kind of behavior. It is the role of the media to deliver news factual to the public. If this work is fabricated it could have a negative effect on people and their opinions. An individual who is associated with news media has a social responsibility to make sure that he or she is giving correct information and facts. This will allow the reader to develop what is accurately going on within a story. Because the reporter has access to the online world, they need to consider the ethical and legal consequences of writing false information.
