Executive Summary:
The Indian gaming industry defines Online Gaming as ‘Gaming that require the use of a PC and internet connectivity, either played online or downloaded and played online later, capable of supporting either single player or multiple players such that the end user is based in India’.
Online gaming is a technology rather than a genre; a mechanism for connecting players together rather than a particular pattern of game play. Online games are played over some form of computer network, now typically on the Internet. One advantage of online games is the ability to connect to multiplayer games, although single-player online games are quite common as well
Console gaming, mobile gaming and personal computer gaming pose as competition to online gaming. In the US, the amount of online play is growing 10 times faster than the U.S internet population, with every alternate user getting in the game. Similarly in the U.K there is a rapid shift towards online gaming.
New trends in the online gaming industry include product based and technology based trends. Product based trends consist of digital downloads and social networking websites.
