THE NEW ZEALAND HORSE INDUSTRY AND THEIR AUCTIONING.

Even with knowledge, natural advantages and national enthusiasm within an industry, it is never without the issues of current economic climate. This paper looks at the buying and selling of NZ horses, how it is done, who feels the effects and who is affected .

Introduction:

There is an estimated 120,000 horses within New Zealand. These all vary in terms of breeding, speciality, height, monetary value and purpose. Some stay with their owners for the entirety of their lives while others may have many owners. The value and selling trends are usually a direct result of the breeding of the animal. The more historical information that can be given, provided that it is good, can often mean that the horse will be worth more as a better prediction can be made as to what the horse of what the horse will be like once being used can be. While they are deemed by some as only an animal, to many within New Zealand, they also represent a sport, hobby, lifestyle and perhaps a business. These people are all important components of the growing equestrian industry which is increasingly becoming noted internationally as a pool of knowledgeable people and the progenies of our bloodlines are gaining credibility. So far, the industry has gone from strength to strength and certainly looks as though it will continue in its form. Unfortunately, for many who are financially involved, the horse markets are highly sensitive to the economy and especially now- in times of recession.

While there is a huge variety of sport competitions and non-recreational pursuits, auctions are considered to be easiest way to sell and buy horses. It is most prominent for those involved within the racing networks and when there is an abundance of wild horses.
