Abstract

It's difficult to find a VHS player anymore, since DVD/Blue ray players have practically made them obsolete. But there are still values to owning either a VHS or DVD player. VHS is older technology, but it is easy to record over programs. DVDs are more expensive, but the quality of sound and picture is extraordinary. This paper will cover some of the arguments that I experienced while visiting a retirement home and trying to convince older citizens on adapting to the newer technology

DVD/Blu-ray VS. VHS

Today DVD and VHS format offer us similar entertainment. DVD format is the most popular of our time due to the newer technology. In this paper I will explain clearly why DVD is the best format to have in your home or common area.

The picture quality of DVD is excellent, because of the new technology. DVD’s can be formatted to contain a high resolution starting from 1024 x 920 resolutions. With DVD’s superior video quality there is virtually no video noise, since the video is recorded digitally. When playing a DVD the picture quality doesn’t deteriorate as the screen gets larger. DVD’s can be programmed to be played on a computer monitor in which the signal can go thru your video graphics card and provide a clearer and crisp picture (Wikepedia, 2011).

VHS

The VHS format however has a set resolution which can’t be changed. VHS playback can be distorted sometime, since VHS playback is recorded in analog format the picture quality will deteriorate over time and it will deteriorate over repetitive playback of the product.

DVD sound quality has always been a superior format. DVD sound has been recorded in Dolby stereo, DTS decoder and 5.1 digital and THX sound all in one compact disk, with the option of selecting the format you want to listen to before the movie or during the movie.
