Deterrence and the Death penalty:

This article that I chose has a lot to of answers to the questions that I have about capital punishment. I believe that capital punishment should be abolished because it does not deter criminals from committing crimes. When reading this article and the different types of studies of crime experts shows the views of how the lawmaker in America thinks about criminals. From this one article, I get the message that the lawmakers only see money, wealth, and power when it comes to making life changing decisions for other Americans.

Even though I know that it’s about politics, money and power, I still wonder why law officials come up with this type of perspective. Our lawmakers that are running for office are the same people who we elect to help keep us safe by setting the rules and regulations and even boundaries for our life. In my opinion, in politics, it’s all about the money. Capital punishment has and still is one of the most arguable hot topics all over the world. Should it or could it ever be abolished in America and can our law officials come to an agreement on this topic.

This article and Radelet and Akers make really good viewpoints on showing how the death penalty does not deter criminals from committing crime, but many law officials are in opposition. As researche Radelet and Akers(1996) have explained, empirical studies can neither

answer the question of what specific criminals or non-criminals deserve, nor settle debates over other moral issues surrounding capital punishment. As these authors do this research, I do agree with what they are trying to prove with their research, but not in totally. sold on the whole thing.
