The history of the OTP Group[1]

The National Savings Bank Company was established on 1 March 1949, which was the predecessor of today’s OTP Bank. The bank – due to the dynamic transformation in the past decade – has become the dominant financial services group in the region.

In the beginning the bank’s activities were the retail lending and deposit collection. Then it is gradually enlarged in the 1970s with the financial management of the councils and the establishment of the two-tier banking system. After the 1980s the bank has started to provide financial services to the companies.

The OTP Bank Public Limited Company was founded in 1990. The non-banking activities were separated by, the subsidiaries were established, and the bank became the flagship of a banking group which provides full range of financial services: Besides the universal banking, it offers mortgage, factoring, leasing, fund management, pension and health services.

In the mid-nineties the largest domestic credit institution has undergone significant changes. The building of an up-to-date integrated computer system has helped to increase the competitiveness, which created the possibility of product and service development, the expanding of sales channels and effective banking.

Since the second half of 1990s the OTP Bank has devoted significant attention to the electronic channels. Since then the OTP direct service – created by the unique brand, single service structure, and technologic background – has major retail and corporate customers.

The privatization of OTP Bank was completed in 1999, the shares are held by Hungarian or foreign investors, or are privately owned. The shares were introduced to the Budapest sock exchange in 1995, but it is available in the stock...
