Abstract

I/O Psychology has a relationship with Human Resources. The information gained by studying I/O psychology becomes an invaluable tool in the day-to-day responsibilities HR professionals face. Being able to understand the Why to human behavior helps address and correct issues before they become problems for the organization.

I/O Psychology and Human Resources – How Do They Relate?

Introduction

Industrial and organizational psychology (known as I/O) is the scientific study of employees, workplaces, and organizations. Organizations use I/O psychologists to contribute to the company’s success by improving the performance and over all well-being of its employees. The Human Resources department (HR) of an organization is often charged with the responsibility of implementing policies and procedures that relate to the management of the individuals working within the company. The goal of the HR department is to maximize return on investment in the organization’s human capital and to minimize risk by aligning employee’s skills and capabilities with that of the company’s needs.

How I/O Psychology Is Associated With Human Resources

I/O psychologists often work in the area of human resources including recruitment and selection, job performance, performance appraisal, compensation, and training and evaluation. Based on the above definitions for each position, the end result is the same – placing the correct individual in the appropriate position within the company to ensure success for both the employee and the company. Both use their knowledge to help organizations address needs and assess strengths.
