Malaysia’s level of regulation?
Malaysia is part of the New Zealand Environmental Law and Regulations which have the following principle guidelines. The governing practices must be in accordance with international environment policy. The laws in place are not for establishing monopoly or special protections (Gross, 2001). But they are to inform trade partners as well as domestic business and the general public of the established practices for environmental regulations.
Malaysia population is over 20 million people. It is one of the top exporters of rubber, timber, natural gas, and petroleum in the world. In addition it is a leader of exports in air conditioners, and electronic semiconductors. Located to the south of Asia, it has experienced tremendous growth and economic success in the early to mid 1990s (Gross, 2001). At that time the Growth Domestic Product was nearly 10%. In the late 1990s Asia’s financial industry experienced a hit due to a loss in GDP of nearly 8%, this vastly impacted the GDP of Malaysia for several years afterward.
Some of the Malaysian Environmental Laws that have been adopted include:
Continental Shelf Act of 1966 (Legislation Malaysia, 2010).
Referring to the sea bed and underlying soil along the Malaysian coasts. The Act sets the parameters at which exploration, extraction, or drilling into the shelf can concur.
Environmental Control Act (Legislation Malaysia, 2010).
This Act stipulates Clean Air Regulations.
Environmental Quality Control for Petroleum & Diesel) Regulations 2007 - P.U. (A). This Act sets the parameters for handling natural gas and oils. (Legislation Malaysia, 2010).
